What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a natural occurring compound which resembles sand, at least chemically. This is because it has the same silicon and oxygen linkages found in sand particles and is similarly quite inert as well. It is resistant to chemical and heat energy and is not, therefore, easily damaged or destroyed.
Where Can I Find Asbestos?
Because of its fiber strength and heat resistance asbestos has been used in a variety of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire retardant. Asbestos has also been used in a wide range of manufactured goods, mostly in building materials (roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper products, and asbestos cement products), friction products (automobile clutch, brake, and transmission parts), heat-resistant fabrics, packaging, gaskets, and coatings.
What are the health risks from exposure to asbestos?
Exposure to asbestos increases your risk of developing lung disease. That risk is made worse by smoking. In general, the greater the exposure to asbestos, the greater the chance of developing harmful health effects.
Who protects us from health risks associated with asbestos in the workplace?
OSHA standards reduce the risk to workers by requiring that employers provide personal exposure monitoring to assess any risk and hazard awareness training for operations where there is any potential exposure to asbestos. If asbestos is known to exist in the workplace, employers are required to make sure exposure is reduced by using administrative controls and providing personal protective equipment for employees. Medical monitoring of workers is also required when legal limits and exposure times are exceeded.
How do I find job opportunities once I am certified?
Whether you attend ME Training for initial training, refresher course or advancing your knowledge of the business, ME Training will connect you to a network of professionals we do business with every day. These professionals are with abatement and construction companies looking for certified individuals.
Does my certification expire? How do I renew it?
All state certifications regardless of the discipline expire in one year from issuance. You will need to take a refresher course each year to keep your certification current. Colorado law prohibits you from working without a current certificate. If your certification expires, you can take the refresher course within one year of your certification expiration date.
